One Piece Concludes a Quarter-Century Era in 2026

It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, once the current storyline concludes, the animated series will go on a three-month hiatus until April, when the next major arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will release a pair of cours every year for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — incorporating more content, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime previously took a half-year break that began in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the visuals and allow the comic to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to deliver viewers with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is presently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the anime covering a single manga chapter, with some instead handling more material or additional to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the traditional method of creation, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally itself have so many filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between installments and the following. Nowadays, anime production is organized in seasons, with a couple at most releasing each annually, enabling improved visuals and more faithfulness to the original work.
